AgelessThrival has nine foundational pillars: Gratitude, Sleep, Nutrition, Exercise, Meditation, Water, Connectivity, Breath of Life, Ecosystems.  This month we will discuss the basics of nutrition and its effects on your telomeres and overall health.

Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Epel won the Nobel Prize for their groundbreaking telomere studies resulting in their book The Telomere Effect and I highly recommend that you read it.  Our telomeres are like the tips that you find on shoestrings so that your shoestring doesn't unravel.  The longer your telomeres the longer and better quality of life you will have as you chronologically age.  Your telomere length directly correlates to your life expectancy, stress, DNA damage, and the onset of Ageing Diseases.  You literally can take command of how you age by assuring you create an individual AgelessThrival strategy that works for you.

What you eat plays a critical role in whether you age and thrive or age and develop age-related diseases.  And no contrary to popular belief you do not have to age biologically as you age chronologically.  You have a choice.  You do not have to develop age-related diseases and illnesses.

The three main cellular enemies are oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and insulin resistance. Poisons and pesticides will shorten your telomeres so it is important to choose fresh produce, vegetables, and fruits that are organically or non-pesticide/poison sprayed.  Check with your local farmers as to how they grow their product.  Moving to a primarily plant-based diet will also help you keep your telomeres longer.  If you want to continue to eat meat look for sustainably farmed which we will discuss more in length when we talk about the 9th foundational pillar, ecosystems.  It is important that avoid all processed foods, and if you can go gluten/dairy-free your gut health will also improve dramatically as well.  Your gut health is critical to maintaining your overall health, telomere length, and immunity.  You want to have a diet that provides an abundance of anti-oxidant fresh fruit, vegetables, and lean and plant-based proteins.  Animal protein is not required to maintain an AgelessThrival lifestyle as plant proteins when well balanced provide all you need when it comes to protein.  And remember that before you start any new nutrition or exercise program to consult your regular health care practitioner.

Which brings me to our current Pandemic that has tilted our world sideways...Why?  The answer is not what it seems but will reveal itself in time.  To shut down a global economy with virus is interesting.  We have a lot of research to do on what will be a set of protocols for treating COVID-19 over time.  My biggest concern is the lack of focus on people taking command of their health.  Particularly gut and immune health.  It is important to eat clean, non processed,  non-poison sprayed and organic foods as possible, use biodegradable cleaning products, and organic skincare.  We need to stop poisoning our ecosystems if we hope to fight off this virus and all pathogens to come.  The biggest is shutting down factory animal agriculture and transforming all of that land to plant food for all of humanity.  Don't forget to read Macara's article on COVID-19 our new normal?
