The Adventures of Caragh, the Service Dog Bouvier de Flandres

Breed: The Bouvier des Flandres is a herding dog breed originating in Flanders, Belgium. They were originally used for general farm work including cattle droving, sheep herding, and cart pulling, and nowadays as guard dogs and police dogs, as well as being kept as pets. The French name of the breed means, literally, "Cow Herder of Flanders", referring to the Flemish origin of the breed. It is said Hitler liked the breed and wanted to own one. The Bouvier they brought recognized how evil he was and bit him. The dog was shot dead and Hitler ordered that all Bouvier de Flandres be destroyed. He almost succeeded. A breeder was able to get a few out of Europe and preserve the breed.

Caragh is bred from a woman in Ontario who has been breeding for 40 years and breeds for preservation of the DNA.

My Fawn Bouvier Elle

My Fawn Bouvier Elle is now 10.5 and they typically live between 10 to 12 years. So late last spring I began thinking about bringing a new puppy into our home. Being in a wheelchair presented an unusual challenge as I had never potty trained from a wheelchair. I had moved and had a new wonderful dog walker/trainer for Elle and I discussed that I wanted to put the puppy through the certified dog service program so that she could help me while still in the wheelchair and then travel with me unchallenged every where I planned on going once I was out of the wheelchair. She was in. You will meet the extraordinary Savanna Nykilchel who is an exceptional dog walker/trainer and now dog show handler.

The breeder was in Ontario. I can't travel so how do I get a puppy from Ontario to BC. Pet Nanny. Wait. There is my friend Aunty Mary who can do anything. She agreed she would happily go pick up the new baby, bring her/he to me and then stay and catch up as it had been awhile since we had spent time together. The puppies were born. I wanted another fawn and didn't care if male or female. It would be either Deuchars or Caragh. One fawn male but I knew she had one buyer who only wanted a fawn male. Denice showed me pictures of Caragh who is classified as a fawn brindle. Black stripes with silver. I didn't want another Black Bouvier but Caragh's energy one me over.

Dec. 4th Mary got on a plane in Kelowna, BC and picked up Caragh from Denice at the Toronto airport. The under seat bags today are amazing. It was airline certified but had to zippered sidepanels so the baby could stretch out. Mary stopped in Calgary and said no one realized she was on board she was so zen. Mary's connecting flight had left early so they had to book her out in the morning. We literally had a pet friendly hotel booked within 6 minutes. Mary had no problems with her in the hotel. They treated Mary and Caragh so well. Mary arrived home with Caragh at about 11 a.m. on Dec. 5th and out comes this spectacular 14 pound bundle of love.

We had her 72 hour vet checkup booked. Mary and Savannah took her in and put me on facetime. Glowing report and a whopping big 30% discount because she was going into the certified dog service program.

I will stop here and do some more updates next week. Caragh will be 9 months on July 6 and is entered in 3 Senior puppy confirmation classes July 10, 11, and 13th. She has won all previously but this time she has another Bouvier pup to show against so it will be fun.
